Anuloma is translated from Sanskrit as “with the grain” or “natural”. The meaning of  Viloma is “against the grain.” 

  • Purifies the Nadis (energy channels)
  • Harmonizes the whole nervous system
  • Balances the left and right hemisphere
  • Maintains an equilibrium in the catabolic and anabolic processes in the body
  • Has a calming effect on the mind, the breath, and the heart

The exercises are given in the order of complexity. Practice some period of time the previous exercise before moving to the next level.

1. Single Nostril Breathing. Ratio 1:2.

  • Inhale (puraka) through the left nostril on 4 counts
  • Exhale (rechaka) through the left nostril on 8 counts
  • This is one round. (Repeat 15-20 rounds).
  • Inhale (puraka) through the right nostril on 4 counts
  • Exhale (rechaka) through the right nostril on 8 counts
  • This is one round. (Repeat the same number of rounds).

2. Anuloma Viloma – Alternate Breathing. Ratio 1:1.

  • Inhale (puraka) through the left nostril on 4 counts
  • Exhale (rechaka) through the right nostril on 4 counts
  • Inhale (puraka) through the right nostril on 4 counts
  • Exhale (rechaka) through the left nostril on 4 counts
  • This is the one round. Repeat 10-20 rounds. With practice increase number of counts: 8:8, 10:10, 40:40, etc. Increase number of rounds to 50-80.

3. Anuloma Viloma – Full Alternate Breathing. Ratio 1:2.

  • Inhale (puraka) through the left nostril on 4 counts
  • Exhale (rechaka) through the right nostril on 8 counts
  • Inhale (puraka) through the right nostril on 4 counts
  • Exhale (rechaka) through the left nostril on 8 counts
  • This is one round. Repeat 10-20 rounds. With practice increase number of counts: 8:8, 10:10, 40:40, etc. Increase number of rounds to 50-80.

This is one round.
